To help minimise the lethal air pollution present throughout London, the Mayor of London has implemented a car, van and motorcycle scrappage scheme. The scheme was introduced prior to the Ultra-Low Emission Zones (ULEZ) coming into effect in April 2019. The scheme’s aim is for Londoners to scrap older, high emission vehicles in favour of low emissions vehicles to help clean the city’s toxic air. The ULEZ car, van and motorcycle scrappage scheme helps those with low income or people receiving disability benefits make the switch. The car and motorcycle scheme has slightly different qualifications to the van scheme, find out which one you are eligible for below.
Who qualifies for the ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme?
You will be eligible for the ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme if you can prove that you live within the 32 London’s boroughs, or in the City of London, and you are claiming one of the following types of benefits:

Which vehicles are eligible for the ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme?
To scrap a vehicle with the ULEZ car and motorcycle scrappage scheme, it will have to meet the following criteria:
The vehicle must be registered with the DVLA to either the applicant or someone who lives at the same address and has owned the vehicle for more than 12 months before 23rd October 2019
To be considered for the benefits of the scrappage scheme, when the vehicle is scrapped, it must be at an approved Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).
Which vehicles are eligible for the ULEZ van scrappage scheme?
To scrap a vehicle with the ULEZ van scrappage scheme, it will have to meet the following criteria:
A van or minibus that is owned by a registered business or charity, as mentioned above, for over a year before the 22nd February 2019
To be considered for the benefits of the van scrappage scheme, when the vehicle is scrapped, it must be at an approved Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF).
What funding is available through the ULEZ scrappage scheme?
For the car and motorcycle scheme, there are two funding options available. You can either earn £1000 if you scrap a motorcycle or moped, or £2000 if you scrap a car. The payment can be used to purchase a newer vehicle with low emissions which meets the ULEZ standards.
If you meet the eligibility and requirements and are able to scrap your van or minibus through the ULEZ van scrappage scheme, there are three funding options available. You can either choose £7000 for scrappage if you are a frequent use of the Congestion Charge area, or you can choose £7000 for scrapping your old vehicle but replacing it with a new Euro 6 replacement. Alternatively, you can get £7000 plus £2500 for the running costs of a new electric van model as a replacement.
How can I apply for the ULEZ scrappage scheme?
To see if your vehicle is eligible for the London ULEZ scrappage scheme, head to the TFL website and fill in your details. You will require evidence on both the vehicle and the benefits you receive to proceed.
As mentioned, one of the requirements is that you scrap your vehicle using an approved Authorised Treatment Facility and get a DVLA Certificate of Destruction (COD) which proves your vehicle has been scrapped and recycled in line with legal requirements.
At Gordon Grove Metal Company, as we are an Authorised Treatment Facility, you can rest assured that you will receive your COD in line with TFL requirements all while providing you with a quick, easy and hassle-free service. In order to support TFL with their Ultra Low Emission scrappage scheme, we will ensure we prioritise scrapping your vehicle so you can apply for the funding as soon as possible. Please make sure you state that you will require a COD when getting in touch with us.
What if my vehicle doesn’t qualify for the ULEZ scrappage scheme?
If you read the ULEZ requirements and see that your vehicle or your benefits don’t meet the requirements, or if you have applied for the scheme and don’t get accepted, don’t worry, you can still scrap your vehicle.
If you would like to scrap your vehicle to decrease emissions and make money from it towards a new one, you can use Gordon Grove Metal Company instead.
